Israelis turn Torquay's maritime relic into show boat
One of Torquay's historic relics now occupies an important place inIsrael's new maritime museum at Sodum on the shores of the Dead Sea.
It's a 16 foot ship's boat used in a perilous research journey on theRiver Jordan and the Dead Sea in 1847.
Later the boat was brought back to England and Torquay where for nearly acentury it served as a roof for a summerhouse in the grounds ofSunnyhill, Higher Warberry Road - once the home of retired BritishAdmiral Sir Thomas Symonds, but now converted into flats.
The boat was "discovered" some years ago in a semi-moldering state by Mr,Jack Bunt, a Paignton guest house proprietor who is the Devon andCornwall public relations officer for the Zionist Federation of GreatBritian and Ireland.
Despatched
After negotiations lasting several months, Mr. Bunt purchased the boat inJune 1963, on behalf of the Israeli government, got it crated anddespatched by road and sea to Haifa.
Since then the boat-with-a-history has been completely restored, and is aprized possession at the Sodum maritime museum.
The background of the link with Torquay stems from the exploits of Lieut.Thomas Howard Molyneux and crew members of HMS Spartan who risked deathfrom marauding tribesmen 132 years ago on a hazardous expedition in theships' boat to examine the course of the River Jordan and to measure thedepth of the Dead Sea.
The Spartan was then commanded by Capt, T.M.C. Symons who later becameAdmiral Sir Thomas Symons and served as Admiral Superintendent ofDevonport dockyard and evidently regarded the boat as his own property.
When in 1866 he relinquished his appointment as Admiral Superintendent,he brought Sunnyhill which was the first home of this Admiral of theFleet until his death in 1894. Sir Thomas erected the summerhouse withthe boat inverted to form the roof.
Neglected
No doubt it was his memorial to the young Lieut. Molyneux, who hadsubsequently died from fever following the 1847 River Jordan expedition.
When Mr. Bunt, who is 78, and his wife, Frieda, visited Israel for aworking holiday four years ago, and saw the Torquay boat he wasresponsible for purchasing, fully renovated and still with its AdmiralSir Thomas Symonds inspired inscription.
For 50 years or more Mr. Bunt has been keenly interested in thedevelopment of Israel, formerly Palestine, into the national home forJewish people.
It all started when he served with General Allenby forces in Palestineduring Worl War I, in which he received serious injuries.
Through the years his love of the country developed tremendously so muchso that he voluntarily took on his public relations work for the ZionistFederation and now spends much time addressing meetings all over SouthDevon and showing films on various aspects of the Israeli nationaldevelopment.
His Wife
He is helped in this work by Mrs. Bunt - his second wife, who is anAustrian born Jew from Vienna, who escaped to the United Kingdom in 1939during the Nazi persecution of Jews.
Now Mr. and Mrs. Bunt, who are constantly saddened by the continuedMiddle East conflict between Jews and Arabs, without any apparentimmediate settlement of the problem - hope to revisit Israel again nextyear- for another working holiday, and more first hand news.
